To print editions of an artist’s work is challenging but incredibly satisfying work for me. The artist has so much invested: emotionally, physically, and spiritually–this is their baby. I consider my role in the process as a visual mid-wife, ready to help in any way I can, to facilitate and help manifest the artist’s work. I feel that I can bring my expertise and sensitivity to the project so that the artist’s vision is fulfilled. When the final prints are viewed and the artist smiles, there’s nothing greater. Andrew

I’ll Be Watching You: Inside the Police 1976-79 - Andy Summers
Andrew worked with Andy Summers to create the I’ll Be Watching You: Inside the Police 1976-79 exhibition which travelled around the world with shows in London, New York, Paris, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Andrew was responsible for all scanning, digital imaging, proofing, and final printmaking. Limited edition prints were sold worldwide in sizes ranging up to 40×60″. He also worked closely with Andy Summers to curate the show and supervised the installation of many shows in the US and Canada. HP was a generous supporter and sponsor of this project.
2006
Pictures – Jeff Bridges
In support of his exhibition, Pictures, and his book of photography, Andrew prepared and proofed the images for the show in collaboration with Jeff Bridges. The show was printed and exhibited in New York’s Carnegie Hall as an exhibition to honor Jeff’s work and career. The exhibition was also shown at The Rose Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.
FLOW – Fine Lines On Water
This exhibition, curated by Diana Cowen, transformed a California icon as it presented Hobie-made surfboards bearing original works of fine art by Cohen, Kymber Holt, Raymond Pettibon, Alison Saar, Francisco Latelier, and others. The ground breaking printing and manufacturing process was achieved with Andrew’s innovative approach to printing and use of specialized materials to create functional art.
On July 7, 2006 Andrew spoke at Le Rencontres D’Arles Photographie in Arles, France as part of Europe’s largest Photographic Festival held yearly in Provence. The talk was part of a series of educational seminars sponsored by HP and were simultaneously translated into French for the participants. Henry WiIlhelm, David Saffir, and Andrew Darlow were just a few of the key presenters at the conference.
Andrew and his classes in fine art printmaking at UCLA Extension were featured in Harald Johnson’s best selling book Mastering Digital Printing. Andrew also wrote a feature article for Great Output magazine about a “shoot out” which tested five medium size printers.
2004
On October 7, 2004, Andrew was selected by the Visual Arts Program at UCLA Extension as the recipient of the 2004 Outstanding Instructor Award in Visual Arts Design/Computer Graphics & Graphic Design. Linda Venis, PhD, the Director of the Department of the Arts, wrote that this award “singles him out as one of the best” dedicated professionals teaching at UCLA Extension. She also wrote that the award “honors his excellence as an instructor and Andrew’s role in forging and upholding the reputation of UCLA Extension.” Andrew’s pioneering printing and color management classes were considered to be the first of their kind, giving students the opportunity to develop the skills in becoming fine art print makers.
2001
In 2001, Andrew developed a series of scanning and imaging, fine art printing, and color management weekend workshops for UCLA’s Graphic Arts Extension program. Having spent years working alongside master print maker Jack Duganne of Duganne Ateliers in production, training, and support, Andrew was well equipped to develop classes and workshops that take the mystery out of the digital printing/imaging process. His training and course development work with Scitex and the now iconic IRIS printer also provided the foundation of knowledge for his teaching in the fine art printing and color management field.
Andrew then went on to create a 10-week hands-on course entitled Mastering Fine Art Digital Printing. This elective course for the Graphic Arts Certificate Program is now offered in the Extension Photography Department as well. He also developed a workshop with photographer Scott Stulberg entitled The Complete Digital Workshop which was designed to help any digital photographer master the workflow from initial capture to imaging to final print.
1998
Andrew had the honor to work alongside Jack Duganne, a pioneer in fine art printmaking and the originator of the term “Giclee” at Duganne Ateliers and eventually became manager of the print studio.
1994
Andrew began work for Scitex America, Ltd. a high end software and hardware manufacturer for the pre-press production and print industry. Scitex owned and supported the IRIS printer, considered to be the first fine art ink jet printer, and sparked the fine art printing revolution. By working alongside IRIS and Scitex engineers he was able to lay the foundation for his fine art printing career. He was a course developer, training ,and technical support specialist and started the class on fine art printing for clients teaching classes in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Massachusetts.
1990
Andrew works for Bauer Publishing, Ltd, as a management trainee. He is given extensive training in the magazine publishing business and at the end sees an opportunity to work in the prepress production department of the magazine on a state of the art Scitex in house system. Here he learns the art of printing, proofing, color management, scanning, color correction and retouching under the expert eye of Richard Buchert, a master print production specialist. It’s with Richard training that Andrew learns a deeper understanding of the relation ship of ink on paper and how to achieve incredible results using the available technology. He also starts working with the Iris printer and color management workflows.
